Financial CrimeCast: Robert Skillington-Smith
Welcome to Financial CrimeCast. In this series, the Centre for Legal Leadership, supported by RPC, talks to leaders in the field of financial crime, compliance and ethics. Guests discuss their career journey, what they have learnt along the way and the financial crime issues they see on the horizon.
In this episode, Sam Tate, Head of White Collar Crime and Compliance at RPC, is joined by Robert Skillington-Smith, Director of Ethics and Compliance at IHG Hotels & Resorts, one of the largest hospitality groups in the world and a constituent of the FTSE 100.
Echoing previous guest's sentiments that there is no single route to a career in financial crime, Robert talks about how working for Transparency International in Cambodia helped crystallise his passion for working in this area. He highlights how important it is to hold your career lightly in order to ensure you take risks when required and grasp opportunities when they are presented.
Sam and Robert talk about how many of the hardest hit sectors by the pandemic are now facing the tight-rope challenge of mitigating increased risk with reduced resources as a result of margin squeeze. They discuss whether the past year is perhaps an opportunity to reset in certain areas and "build back better" towards improved responsible business practices.
