RPC launches Porter, its in-house AI assistant built to enhance legal service delivery
International law firm RPC has launched Porter, its proprietary AI assistant developed in-house to support lawyers and business professionals across the firm. Fully embedded within RPC’s systems and workflows, Porter enables faster, smarter legal work, freeing up teams to focus on high-value analysis, judgement and client service.
Porter supports a range of daily tasks, including document summarisation, intelligent drafting, data extraction, legal research and workflow automation. Developed by the RPC Knowledge, Legal Technology and IT teams, it’s built specifically around how our people work — not as an off-the-shelf solution, but as a tool designed to evolve with our needs and support the way we deliver legal services.
“We’ve built Porter to empower our people to spend more time on the work that matters,” said Alistair Johnson, RPC COO. “It’s about using AI to augment, not replace, the critical human skills at the heart of legal practice.”
Security and client confidentiality are central to Porter’s design. It operates entirely within the firm's enterprise-grade infrastructure and is governed by the firm’s AI policy framework, covering ethical use, data privacy, and legal risk.
That framework underpins the broader RPC AI programme, which is structured around three pillars:
• Policy and governance: A robust internal framework covering ethical use, data protection, confidentiality, and the responsible evaluation of AI tools. This includes an internal scoring matrix to assess new pilots and manage risk.
• Pilot and implementation: A rigorous approach to testing, selecting and embedding AI tools, from secure test environments to structured pilot programmes and post-rollout support.
• Education and engagement: Comprehensive training to prepare teams for working with AI responsibly and effectively, while encouraging experimentation and curiosity.
Antony Sassi, Managing Partner, adds: “We're focussing on practical tools that help our people work smarter, deliver faster, and spend more time where they add the greatest value: with clients. We’re not chasing trends; we’re building capability that reflects how our people work.”
Porter is just the start of a broader programme of AI innovation at RPC, driven by collaboration across the firm and a strong focus on what genuinely helps lawyers and clients.
“We don’t see AI replacing lawyers — we see it supporting them." concludes Antony. “Porter is helping free up time for the deep thinking, insight and building and maintaining trusted relationships that define great legal service.”
