RPC achieves SBTi validation for science-based net-zero targets

Published on 07 January 2026

International law firm RPC has achieved validation from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for its near-term and long-term greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction targets, confirming alignment with climate science and the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C.

RPC is committed to achieving net-zero GHG emissions across its entire value chain by 2050, from a 2022 baseline year. Net zero will be achieved by reducing absolute Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions by at least 90% by 2050.

The firm's validated targets include:

  • reducing absolute Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 75.15% by 2030;
  • reducing absolute Scope 3 emissions by 40% by 2030; and
  • ensuring suppliers responsible for 80% of emissions from Purchased Goods and Services set net-zero targets aligned with a 1.5°C pathway by 2030.

The firm has committed to reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions to zero by 2035.

Kelly Thomson, Partner and Executive Board member at RPC, commented: "Achieving SBTi validation is a significant milestone in our net-zero journey and reflects our commitment to our science-based targets. We are immensely proud of the work led by Katie Horn and the Responsible Business team, whose dedication and collaboration have helped embed our environmental strategy across our operations."

Rachel Pears, Associate Director, Responsible Business & Employment Counsel at RPC, added: "Sustainability, responsibility and transparency sit at the heart of RPC. Validation from the SBTi reflects our dedication to embed responsible business practices into every aspect of our organisation. We are committed to delivering our targets and reducing our climate footprint for our people and the planet."

To support the delivery of these targets, RPC has already taken several steps to strengthen its decarbonisation approach, including onboarding carbon data platform Normative to enhance the transparency and efficiency of emissions tracking and reporting.

Recognising the importance of people in delivering change, RPC has also embedded internal working groups across key operational areas, and launched its bespoke Environmentally Minded e-learning programme.

The firm's targets are aligned with the UK net zero legislation, underlining its commitment to credible, science-based climate action. RPC was supported by PlanetMark throughout the development of its net-zero targets and SBTi validation, providing independent guidance and expertise.
